What is Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery?
Otolaryngology (pronounced oh/toe/lair/in/goll/oh/jee) is the oldest medical specialty in the United States. Otolaryngologists are physicians trained in the medical and surgical management and treatment of patients with diseases and disorders of the ear, nose and throat (ENT), and related structures of the head and neck. They are commonly referred to as ENT physicians.
Otolaryngologists are ready to start practicing after completing up to 15 years of college and post graduate training. To qualify for certification by the American Board of Otolaryngology , an applicant must first complete college, medical school, and then at least five years of specialty training.
What is Pediatric Otolaryngology?
Pediatric otolaryngology is a subspecialty within otolaryngology that exists to provide care of infants and children with both common and unusual ENT problems. These subspecialists have usually gone on for additional training or have completed formal fellowships at tertiary care centers.
Children are unique and so are their treatments. Many of the disorders that affect the head and neck are only seen in children. Other conditions may be treated quite differently in a child compared to an adult. This evolving body of knowledge has stimulated the development and growth of pediatric otolaryngology as a separate subspecialty. Pediatric otolaryngology as a subspecialty is recognized and accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), the American Hospital Association (AHA), the American Medical Association (AMA), the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and the Council of Medical Specialty Societies (CMSS).
